Gloucester Engineering to Feature Extrusion and Converting Machinery Solutions at Chinaplas 2013

Gloucester Engineering Co., Inc. (“GEC”), a portfolio company of Blue Wolf Capital Fund II, L.P., will feature its lines of advanced engineered equipment for the plastic extrusion industry at its exhibit at Chinaplas 2013, which is being held May 20-23 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou.

Headquartered in Gloucester, MA, GEC is a leading designer and manufacturer of cast film, blown film, and foam extrusion lines, as well as bag making machines, and complementary auxiliary equipment from its subsidiaries, Future Design, Inc., and Pearl Technologies, Inc.  GEC’s equipment is used to produce the highest quality plastic film, sheet and foam for a multitude of applications around the world.  With more than 50 years of service to the plastics and converting industries, GEC’s significant global installed base is estimated to consist of more than $2 billion in operating assets.

Gloucester Engineering’s product lines are not engineered as standard equipment, explained Chew, but are customized solutions for each individual customer, focusing on their return on investment (ROI).  They are extremely durable and feature both high first pass yields as well as world-class outputs.  “Most importantly, we do not try to commoditize our customers’ applications,” he said.  “We engineer high performance machinery tailored for individual customer needs, and we partner with them to ensure their success.”

Specialty, high-end extrusion applications such as cast stretch, agri stretch, high barrier, and other multi-layer films continue to be an area of continued growth for GEC and the company will share its knowledge and expertise in these areas with show visitors.  “We look forward to the opportunity to discuss with show visitors how we can help drive growth and profitability through upgrades or new lines,” said Chew.

Strategic Acquisitions

In just the past year, Gloucester Engineering has acquired two industry leaders that improve GEC’s overall portfolio of products and services:  Future Design Inc of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, and Pearl Technologies of Savannah, New York.

Future Design is a leading manufacturer of innovative products for the flexible packaging industry.  The company is particularly well-regarded for their blown film bubble management expertise in a wide array from small to big blown film applications and products such as their trademarked Saturn and Perfect Balance air rings (with profile control technology), patented SES evacuation systems, blown film line components, and Little Giant narrow web/lab lines. The Saturn brand of air rings has, in fact, long been recognized as market leading technology.

Since 1985, Pearl Technologies has engineered and manufactured consumable parts for film extrusion and converting equipment that improve performance and reduce operating costs.

For converters, Pearl has provided customers with customized aftermarket products such as punches, perforating, and slitting and wicket attachments. They carry a full line of air cylinders, ball and die punches, and perforation blades. They also offer trade-in and “on-your-line” demo trial programs.
